Effect of near infrared reflection and evaporative cooling on quality of mangoes CIGR Journal
Kipruto, Korir Meshack.
Mango fruit is valuable in Kenyadue to its nutritive and economic value.  However, at least 40% to 45% of the fruit is lost during postharvest handling due to inadequate storage facilities.  This study aimed at investigating the effect of combination of near infrared reflection (NIR) and evaporative cooling (EC) on quality of mangoes.  Freshly mature Apple and Kentmangoes were selected, cleaned and stored in NIR store (SNR).  The shelf-lives and quality attributes namely physiological weight, colour and firmness were evaluated on daily basis against similar fruits stored in an equivalent non-NIR store (SNNR).  Storage under room conditions (RC) was used as control experiment.  Digital scale, Minolta colour difference meter and penetrometer were used to...

Effect of root zone cooling and evaporative cooling in greenhouse on the growth and yield of potato seed by aeroponics in tropical lowlands CIGR Journal
Sumarni, Eni; Hardanto, Afik; Arsil, Poppy.
Temperature control of the rooting area with application of root zone cooling in an aeroponic system succeeded in maintaining the freshness of potato plant roots during planting to achieve tuber initiation. However, following the application of root zone cooling, many wilted plants that were burnt due to high temperatures above the plant surface remained. Therefore, effort is needed to improve the condition of the top of the plant, so that the growth of potato plants in the lowlands may be optimized. The results of some studies show that evaporative cooling can reduce the pressure of hot temperatures in the greenhouse and the area around the plant canopy. Therefore, integrated research on the aeroponic system for the application of root zone cooling and...

Evaluation of a simplified model for estimating energy balance in broilers production housing AGRIAMBI
Silva,Mariano P.; Baêta,Fernando C.; Tinôco,Ilda F. F.; Zolnier,Sérgio; Ribeiro,Aristides.
The simulation of poultry house thermal behavior with and without Adiabatic Evaporative Cooling (SRAE) allows the decision makers to evaluate the economical feasibility and the installation costs of a poultry production business. The first step in this research investigation was test the thermal behavior model developed by Gates et al. (1995) for broiler houses in the United States based on the hypothesis that this model, using climatized sheds, as proposed by the authors, could be used under Brazilian conditions. The model is suitable for the proposed objective in the form proposed by Gates et al. (1995) for poultry houses with an elevated mass air flow rate (120.8 kg air s-1 or higher). A correction factor referring to a series of heat sources not...

Experimental evaluation of bulk charcoal pad configuration on evaporative cooling effectiveness CIGR Journal
Korese, Joseph Kudadam; Hensel, Oliver.
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the performance of bulk charcoal pad configuration, experimentally. For this, a number of experiments have been conducted in a wind tunnel in order to evaluate the pressure drop, cooling efficiency and specific water consumption as a function of air velocity, water flow rate and pad configuration. The test were carried out at six levels of air velocity (0.12, 0.51, 0.82, 1.05, 1.10 and 1.14 m s-1), three water flow rates (2.2, 3.2 and 5.2 l min-1) and three pad configurations: single layer pad (SLP), double layer pad (DLP) and triple layer pad (TLP) made out of small and large size charcoal particle of equivalent diameter 30 mm and 50 mm respectively. It was found that pressure drop range of small size charcoal pads...

Mini tomato production in organic system under greenhouse with partial control of meteorological elements AGRIAMBI
Araujo,Haroldo F. de; Leal,Paulo A. M.; Zorzeto,Thais Q.; Nunes,Eduardo F.; Betin,Pâmela S..
ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate the meteorological elements of the environments and the production components of mini tomato crop in organic system in different forms of cultivation, biofertilizer doses and technological levels of protected environments. The research was conducted in completely randomized design in a 3 x 2 x 5 factorial scheme, corresponding to three greenhouses (A - climatized, B - mobile screen and C - fixed screen), two forms of cultivation (pots and beds) and five doses of a commercial biofertilizer (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200% of dose indicated), with five replicates. The treatments affected the analyzed variables, except for biofertilizer doses and interaction of treatments. Air temperature was unchanged among...
